Description
The Spastics Society of Tamilnadu [SPASTN] was started by a group of philanthropists in 1981, the International Year for the Disabled. Initiated by Ms. Shanthi Sadiq Ali, wife of the then Governor of Tamilnadu, the purpose of SPASTN was to have a special school for children with Cerebral Palsy. It was first located in a room, provided by Mrs. Nandita Krishnan, at the C.P.Ramaswamy Iyer Foundation.
Ms. Sarah Chanda was the first secretary of SPASTN and was closely involved in its administration for over a decade. She was instrumental in getting the 5-acre plot of land allotted in Taramani. Since 1989, SPASTN has been operating across Old Washermanpet, Ayanavaram and Taramani (Headquarters).
