Nir Ideal Home for Mentally Retarded and Associated Disability is a non-religious, apolitical & non-profit registered organization works towards the inclusion of disabled communities in remote areas of Sundarban and five Blocks of the North 24 Parganas District of West Bengal, namely Haroa, Deganga, Basirhat- I, Basirhat- II. Many of these areas are highly inaccessible and socially & economically unstable. It focused on improving the lives of disabled in India by equipping, mobilizing, educating and empowering them, to achieve equality and make a just society. Gradually expanded its activities in other areas like health, nutrition, rural sanitation, livelihood and food security programme etc. in an attempt to address the social issues in a holistic manner.
Nir has been instrumental in strengthening grassroots level organizations – DPOs, Panchayats engaged in rural transformation by building their capacities and support towards organizational development.
Over the years, Nir has been playing a vital role in creating opportunities for enhancing livelihoods leading to empowerment and improved quality of life. Sustainability, resilience and success are the core values that guide Nir in driving systemic change for socio-economic impact. Nir bridges the gaps and indigenously promote a flexible atmosphere to available provisions and schemes offered by government and guide community people access easily.
Nir’s programmatic focus is to teach young members of rural communities’ especially adolescent disabled girls and boys, develop their understanding of socio-economic development issues and create spaces for their voices in the mainstream. It has received several awards in recognition of its work: Since 2007 the Government has accredited NIR as a –‘District Level Resource Organization’ for implementation and monitoring of Sarva Siksha Aviyan (SSA) teachers who work in the North and South 24 Pgs. State Award “outstanding Institution working for the cause of Disability” from Women and Child Department, West Bengal on 3rd Dec. 2021.
Nir organized 125 awareness and eye check-up camps and distributed free 5000 spectacles 300 cataract operations. It shouldered relief work and trying to develop a system of protecting suffered people because of severer cyclones and storms owing to regular climate changes.
