Description
In order to meet the National need for more doctors and to improve Human Development Index in the state by increasing the availability of qualified doctors, State Government of Gujarat has planned to establish new medical colleges under Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society which has commenced setting up institutions of excellence in medical education and research in various parts of the State, thus ensuring spread of health care services and medical knowledge.
Medical colleges at Sola – Ahmedabad and Gotri – Vadodara were established in the academic year 2011-12 and MBBS degrees awarded by these colleges are recognized by the Govt. of India. Three more colleges were established in the year 2012-13 at Gandhinagar, Dharpur-Patan and Valsad. In the year 2015-16, GMERS Medical College Himmatnagar and Junagadh were granted permission by the GOI. All these colleges have admission capacity of 150 students each per year taking the total to 1050 admissions per year.
Process to establish one more new Medical College at Vadnagar in the District Mehsana is in progress.
