Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University

Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) was established on 1 July 1989 under Act No. XX (1989) enacted by the Maharashtra State Legislature. It is the fifth Open University in India. The jurisdiction of the University extends throughout the entire State of Maharashtra. The University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi under Section 12(B). The University is also a member of several prestigious national and international organizations, including the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU), and the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE).

The mission of YCMOU is to become a “Mass Varsity”. With the objective of “Reach the Unreached”, the University offers need-based educational programmes for socially disadvantaged and remote sections of society. These programmes range from certificate courses to postgraduate degree programmes. The University headquarters is located at Nashik, and educational services are delivered across Maharashtra through its 8 Regional Centres and 1,711 Learner Support Centres.

Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, Swami Ramanand Teerth, and many other eminent thinkers and social reformers made significant contributions to the educational movement in Maharashtra. Against the backdrop of this rich educational tradition, the need for an Open University in the state was strongly felt. Accordingly, the Maharashtra State Legislature established this University on 1 July 1989 under Act No. XX (1989). The University was named after Late Yashwantrao Chavan, the architect of modern Maharashtra’s agricultural and industrial development.

The Maharashtra State Legislature and the University Grants Commission (UGC) have granted the University full authority to award Certificates, Diplomas, and Degrees. The University exercises due diligence in curriculum design, development, and student assessment processes, ensuring the maintenance of quality and academic standards in education and examinations.

All Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) Degree Programmes offered by the University are duly recognized and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi. Therefore, for employment as well as higher education purposes, these programmes are considered valid and equivalent to corresponding programmes offered by any other statutory university in India. In this regard, the status of this University is at par with all other statutory universities in the country.
